Growing up: Lawyers and doctors are rich!
Pre-Law School: (stars in my eyes) In three years my husband is going to be smart and rich!
Second year of law school: Huh, well this has to be worth it eventually right?
Four months away from graduation from Law School: Meh.
I admit to being just as disillusioned about law school and the prospects of my husband being an attorney as some people are about marriage being a romantic fun ride of never ending happiness. (P.S. If you’re new here, I don’t love newlyweds. They induce my gag reflex hardcore.)
Here we are, four months away from graduation and while three years ago I thought I’d be picking between a Cadillac or a Lexus, at this point I’m left deciding between Ramen or Mac & Cheese for dinner.
I don’t regret Cody going to law school. He enjoys it and he’s damn good at it.
We’re still married. We still like each other. We’re actually never around each other enough to get sick of each other.
My illusions about a rich lawyer husband are smashed.
We have so much else to look forward to besides fast cars and diamond shoes. Like massive graduate school debt and a whole lifetime (well, 30 years) to pay it off. See that? How I made that a glass half full thing?
Law school has really helped my cynicism.
So hit me, let’s be optimistic about those pessimistic things in our lives.
Let me give you another example,
Cody’s gone at school all the time, but I never have to share the TV.
Your turn.
Oh, Lord, newlyweds make me want to claw my eyes out while running as fast as I can in the opposite direction. What’s with the touching? And the kissing? And the pet names? GAG.
Hm. The bus ride to school makes me want to puke what with the smells and the overactive heating system, but at least I save money on gas.

You see, I had to go through law school with a husband and children as well. It sucked. And now we have heavy student loans to pay back…and hubby’s having trouble working due to some mental health issues…so we’re pretty much screwed.
I knew I should have gone to medical school and left him home with the kids.
Oh, well, at least we still have Paris. Wait, no, we don’t. crap.

Newlyweds – gag. When I was first married, a church leader came up to me and expressed concern that my husband and I weren’t affectionate enough in public. “Other couples hold hands and kiss and cuddle during church. You guys don’t do a thing.” Five years later and I’m still annoyed he thought this meant a good marriage.

Also, Amelia, can I just say how hysterical I think it is that it somehow became a problem that you weren’t making out in church. Wow.

Yeah, wait till you start paying the loans. We just started. And it’s awesome, because we were looking for a place to put an extra $1,100/month. Even better no one will consolidate because of the economy. Hip hip hooray!
Seriously though, my husband is SO happy being a lawyer and that is totally worth it.

Wait, but I’m a lawyer who makes lots of money!
Oh, I don’t practice law. That’s right.
My mother always tries to tell me that I should practice law instead of doing what I do. I try to explain to her that the median salary for a lawyer out of law school who does NOT work for a big firm is in the $55-70K range, and she just won’t believe it.
I have friends who have been out for eight years who are still making $35K.
Cody’ll find a good job, though. Just think litigation instead of transactional. And you’ll have your Lexus soon enough.
Unless you really want that second kid!

I have so much credit card debt I can hardly make my minimum payments, which is not great. But it actually worked to my advantage when the woman who stole my wallet (the day after Christmas) decided to take out a credit card in my name, and was denied.
Not because the block on my social security card had gone through, but because I am really REALLY really in debt.

It’s been about 2 1/2 months since my husband found out he passed the bar exam, and he’s still looking for a lawyer job. The funny thing is, most entry-level attorney positions earn LESS (we’re talking $10K-20K less) than his current data analyst position with just a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.
On the bright side, with his computer job, he can work from home a couple days a week… which saves us about $50/month in gas money. Which is just going towards paying back his loans anyway, but oh well.
