how to photograph fireflies and ruin your kid.

Tonight we let Addie stay up late. This time of year our backyard is magical. Thousands of fireflies. Thousands.

Disneyworld has nothing on our backyard.

I tried my hardest to get even one picture.

fireflies

Magical right?

Uh. Here’s the thing.

Cody has 24 bug bites.

I have about 14.

To make matters worse, Cody tried to catch a firefly for Addie.

Well. He did catch a firefly for Addie.

A firefly that was being eaten by a giant spider.

Addie couldn’t run away fast enough.

At least she won’t want to stay up late to see the fireflies anymore?

  1. I know the bug bites aren’t fun but what I wouldn’t give to finally see a real, live firefly–in person. Of course I’d prefer one NOT being eaten by a giant spider.

  2. Fireflies are magical. The first (and last) time I ever saw them, I was 15 yrs old & we were camping in Iowa. It was wonderful. 🙂

  3. Ewww… that’s so icky! I really don’t like spiders.

Fireflies really are magical. I thought so when I was little too… The first time I caught one in my hand I clasped my hands together and brought it over to the light, which is when I realized that it was a BUG! Haha. They are like beetles! I’m not sure what my little 4 year old self was thinking they were, but I wasn’t expecting a bug. 😀 They are still great though! I’m jealous of your backyard!

  4. Casey, I may need a copy of that shot. AMAZING. Can I? Would You?

I grew up in NY and we used to spend all Summer catching fireflies and watching them bumble around our backyard lighting up like magic. And now I live in MA and for some reason we don’t have them here. I miss them dearly. I’m sad that my kids don’t get to see them and chase them like I did- they’re so gorgeous.

  5. Last year we caught a BUNCH of fireflies for our two older kids. (they’re 5 and 6) And put them in a glass jar just like I did when I was a kid. So they could enjoy them.

Except, well. I kind of forgot to punch holes in the top of the jar.

So the next morning, instead of a jar of happy flying fireflies, my children were greeted with little firefly corpses littering the bottom of the jar. I’m pretty sure my daughter wept intermittently for two days.

To this day they both hate fireflies.

I am SUCH a great mom.

  6. It’s the bugs. BUGS! I! CAN! NOT! STAND!

If it were socially acceptable to be covered from head to toe in netting that is how I would walk around.

So please keep taking pictures of your backyard as I will enjoy them from the safety of my house.

  7. Well, it makes me feel better to read that you have trouble taking photos of them, too.

We headed out into the yard tonight to catch a few, and I thought I’d get some really cute shots. Nope. Between the darkness, the speed of my kids and the unpredictability of the lightning bugs, all I got was blur. Bummer. Guess we’ll just have to REMEMBER how great it is to see these all over the yard on a summer night.

  8. Uh oh! Catching fireflies was one of my favorite things to do as a child. I haven’t even seen any yet this year. I’ll have to keep an eye out 🙂

  9. Oh dear. Hopefully she can forget the spider!

Fireflies bite?! (Can you tell we don’t have those in Utah?)

My niece decided butterflies aren’t so awesome after we wound up covered in hundreds of tiny caterpillars when we went camping last weekend.
