Have floor? Will suck.

While I could give you a list of “chores” I abhor and avoid until absolutely necessary, I could just as easily give you a list of “chores” that I secretly get excited about. Or better yet, how to get me to do chores at your house without even asking.

1. Leave your clean laundry out in a pile. I will fold it. I love to fold laundry. I know of at least seven people who read this blog who can attest to my love of laundry folding.

2. Doing laundry. Some people are squicked out at the idea of someone else doing their laundry. I’ll do it in a heartbeat because I know at the end I will get to fold it. And smell it. Clean laundry smell. Mmmm. The whole process is made even better by Soap Nuts from Laundry Tree. I got samples from BlogHer in July and have been loyal ever since. My sister and I have both been known to find excuses to do laundry we love it so much. Sick. I know.

3. Vacuuming. Well, not my house. I have a circa 2000 Hoover vacuum that smells like burnt hair whenever it is turned on. But I’ll vacuum your house. If you have a Dyson. Both my dad and my MIL have Dysons and I have been known to purposely spill things for an excuse to use their Dysons. It also gives me a sick sense of satisfaction that even though my MIL keeps an incredibly tidy house, the Dyson will suck up things from her carpet no one ever knew existed. Kind of like seeing the perfectly popular girl with lipstick on her teeth. I stroke them everytime I pass one in a store whispering “someday, someday.”

4. Ironing. Did you just hear my husband snort? That’s because I don’t really iron HIS shirts. They’re so big and there’s so many and his pants with the cuffs and the pleats and let’s just say he now knows why dry cleaners are in business. But I do like to iron. When I knew Cody was going to be going to law school and that law stuff involves fancier clothes than jeans I figured I had better invest in a good iron so I didn’t dread ironing when I had to do it. I have this Rowenta iron. And whoo. It’s good. 

Now. Is there someone out there who loves to do dishes and mop the floor? Because those are the things I dread and put off as long as possible. Let me know, I’m really into starting a whole Canadian/American border blogger commune with a Target and really good health care.

  1. Hmmm…not so much about mopping the floor. But I like to do dishes. I don’t mind laundry, but really don’t like the folding. Do you put away too? This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

  5. Yay, a soul mate! Kinda. I LOVE to fold laundry. Building all those nice tidy piles? What’s not to love? And dishes? Nothing like having a pile of dirty dishes on the left and making them clean in the warm, sudsy water and ending up with a clean pile on the right. I also love cutting the grass. Basically, I love any chore that gives me instant visual gratification. Vacuuming, not so much, because unless something is REALLY filthy, you can’t see the result. Ooh, but I do like those patterns a vacuum makes on the carpet. And I wonder why I’m single?

  7. So, I’m thinking that you should come to my house and fold all my laundry.

    Currently my sofa, love seat and coffee table are all missing and the St Bernard I sent out searching for kid 3 has turned up empty pawed. I’m pretty sure my unmated socks ate her.

  11. Ugh, I HATE laundry. But I do love washing the dishes by hand. I don’t know why, I just enjoy it. And I like to clean bathrooms because they’re so pretty and sparkly when you’re done.

  14. I like doing the dishes by hand. I have this weird aversion to emptying the dishwasher, so my husband does that.

    I am awesome at cleaning other people’s places but I’m not as on top of it at home.

    And I ? Dyson, it will suck up so much cat hair that the cat will think she’s next. My college vacuum is starting to break, (darn) time to make an investment.

  16. I will give you a set of keys to my apartment just so you could do my laundry as much as you wanted. I’d even let you wash/fold AGAIN.

    I’m very generous, I know. 🙂

    Unfortunately I hate doing dishes and mopping the floors. But for some reason I like sweeping. Don’t ask, I have no idea why I don’t like mopping but enjoy sweeping.

  18. I do love myself a dirty dish – particularly at other people’s houses. It’s totally weird, but I like doing dishes and people are so appreciative if you tackle their sink.

    I also love doing laundry – NOT folding it. Mopping, toilets – NO.

    I LOVE the washing part of laundry (natch) but the folding, hanging, and putting away? Not so much. Am TOTALLY willing to do your dishes and mop your floor in trade. (And I’m thinking that having your sunny wit around would be a huge bonus).

  22. Oh, no cleaning afflictions here! Although I’m like Rachel, would rather do dishes by hand than use the dishwasher. The Roomie just does NOT get that. LOL.

  24. I can’t think of a chore that I “love” doing. I love the result. I will do the dishes to have a clean sink and kitchen. I will do the laundry to have the hampers empty and the closet full. I guess I’m an -end result- kind of person. It’s not the journey, it’s the destination. (When it comes to chores.)

    Oh wait, I take it back. There is something that I love doing. I love doing the tedious painting in my house. The edging and the small spaces that take a lot of concentration and time.

  27. I don’t mind hanging things right from the dryer, but socks and undies go straight from the dryer to the basket and stay there. Can’t remember the last time they made it to the drawer!

  28. I actually enjoy mopping, dusting, and cleaning the shower. I often do the dishes, not because I like to, but because a sinkful of dirty dishes squicks me and they must be cleaned. I hate folding and organizing. Can we be bestest friends in the blogger commune?

  30. Oh my! This is scary because besides the vacuuming (which I detest) I LOVE the above stated chores. The whole process of doing laundry is one of the most satisfying and relaxing things to me, and ironing is meditation as far as I am concerned!!!

  31. My mom was doing a craft with my 5 year old that required ironing. She was mortified when my daughter asked what the iron was. Apparently she had never seen one. She came home and asked “Mom, do we have one of those iron things?” Words cannot express how much I hate ironing.

    For some crazy reason I don’t mind scrubbing though. Toilets, floors, dishes, whatever.

  33. Tee hee…let’s see…you have mopped my floor, folded my laundry…thrice if we include the time you washed some of my stuff in Indy…and AND you have ironed with MY Rowenta. Dood, how come I did not introduce you to Kirby when you were here? She is a beauty. I love her. She may even put the dyson to shame. The only diff? She uses a bag.

    And makeup TOTALLY counts…cuz it has been four days for me too, and I don’t think it is going to happen today either. That pic of you and your mom is totally kick @$$!

  34. I love doing dishes. I own a perfectly good dishwasher that is in just as much perfectly good working order. Now ask me how many times I’ve actually used it this past year. Maybe three times? I don’t remember. I’ve had the same bag of Cascade Powerball thingies since they first came out, and the bag is not anywhere close to being empty. I will wash dishes for people if I go to their house and see that they have dirties in the sink. It’s a sickness.

  36. I’m with ya on the laundry thing. Seriously.
    I’ve gone over to my friends’ homes to see laundry baskets with piles (cause they have 3+ kids) and I’ll just pull up a chair and start folding.

    Another one?
    Washing dishes. And I don’t mean using the dishwasher either. I mean hot,soapy water and a dishcloth.

    My mother still isn’t sure where that came from, since I used to disappear into the bathroom with a good book for a long time when time came to do dishes.

    I had (you saw that right, HAD) the Dyson until it ruined my carpet that was only 9 months old…you can also read all about that on my blog. It sucked too much, and unraveled all my shag carpet in my WHOLE DARN HOUSE!! After 3 months of fighting with Dyson, Stainmaster, and my place of employment (RC Willey)…they replaced it. Yeah, for being a naggy customer. LOVE THIS POST!

  38. I feel the same way about vacuuming with a good vacuum as I do popping zits…looooooove it.

    Until my dying day I will remember you being the one who streamlined my underwear drawer by teaching me how to fold “packets.” Life has been so much easier since then…

  43. My Christmas gift to you- about 4 unfolded loads of laundry- HAVE AT IT girl!

    Honestly, I love the smell of detergent and softener while it is washing and drying. But I hate to fold. HATE.

    I also like to iron- just because it is so mindless that my mind can just wander- I do my best pondering over mindless ironing/dishes by hand type tasks 🙂

  44. i don’t even own an iron. when we got married – i was 20 – and gabe asked me to iron his shirts for him. i did such a crappy job he was all “i think i’ll take them to the cleaners from now on” so i haven’t ironed in ten years!

    but i DO like the wash the floor!

  46. Ok, don’t tell anyone, but I like doing the laundry…you and I are a perfect match. I love to wash it, there is something so wonderful about separating it out for me…it’s the folding and putting away that are less than joyful for me. My kids’ clean clothes will sit in their hampers until the moment I need the hampers to put dirty clothes in. It’s a sickness.

  47. Ok I am not so hot on the chores but I can loan you a British Air Force (aka R.A.F.) man, who is BRILLIANT at chores, to do all dishes and mopping if you are prepared to travel to England to do some hoovering for me!! I have a Dyson 🙂
