Comfortably broken.

Earlier in the summer when the temperatures started creeping into the 90’s my air contioning went fritzy.

“Mrs. moosh, it looks like your A/C fixed with parts and labor will be $1,300.”

DO IT.”

I didn’t think it through, I didn’t even consider getting a second opinion. Had it been something like brakes? Eh, negotiable. But A/C?

Fix it and fix it now.

That brings me to my camera.

It had been acting a little fritzy itself and I took it into a camera store just to make sure it wasn’t me.

“Mrs. moosh, your camera doesn’t focus. It needs to be fixed.”

“Focus? Pshaw. It still kind of works, right? I can make do…I don’t want to part with it.”

“Mrs. moosh? You’re an idiot, your camera doesn’t focus. Not a negotiable feature.”

“Fine. Fix it and fix it now.”

Then I learned that “fix it and fix it now” doesn’t apply to SLR cameras. It’s more like “we’ll fix it eventually and it should be back in 4 to 6 weeks.”

WEEKS PEOPLE. WEEKS.

I’m twitching without it. My right index finger is growing weak and becoming depressed from shutter withdrawl.

Colors are brighter and magical fairies riding tiny little unicorns appear in flowery meadows on a daily basis, only you’re going to have to just believe me because I don’t have a camera to prove it. A photographer was even the Higglytown Hero today.

The Disney Channel is mocking my pain.

I realize I live a blessed life, and that my camera is just a thing (I’m sorry camera, I don’t mean it! I LOVE YOU!) But there are just a few comforts and luxuries I don’t love going without in life.

A/C and my Camera.

You?

  1. I’m fighting with my daughter about getting her a new pair of school shoes (come on, Emme, can’t you curl your toes a little?), but bought myself a new printer b/c the old one broke and I NEED a printer!

  2. My computer is one of those silly things I can’t live without. As for non physical things coaching sports (not to just win but more to have fun and see the interaction between the kids as they become friends) and seeing my boys grow up! Fresh corn and strawberry’s in the summertime! The autumn leafs and the dead silence on a snowy winter evening. Just a few things that I can’t live without…

  4. i have been wanting a new camera for awhile now. i couldn’t really justify it, because we didn’t have the money and the old one worked fine. while in france this past week i took lots of pictures with the old thing. once i got home i started to notice that many of them had a smudge in the center. there was a fingerprint or something on the camera. my husband borrowed it about halfway through the week so i blame him. while using the camera he changed the battery and actually broke the little door that holds the battery in. now it has to be taped shut. NOW i can justify getting a new camera. YEA!!!!

  5. A/C is probably #1 on my list. I’m not as concerned about my camera because I have 2 SLRs (one D, one film) so even if something went horribly wrong I’d still be OK.

But, when they told you the camera “doesn’t focus”, did they mean the AF (autofocus) wasn’t working? Because if not, then focusing isn’t a function of the camera, it’s a function of the lens. And technically, you can focus without AF. (Just saying, if you want to try and get it back and delay the repair until after fall.)

  8. I nearly always get my car fixed right. away. I know a lot of people drive with little issues or little dings in their cars, but it drives me insane (so long as I have the money). Of course, the check engine light has been on for a month now, and I got a ding in the roof on Sunday from the WIND STORM OF 2008!!!, but I am slowly hesitating, since it’s nearly paid off. (YEAH!)

  9. oh for SURE. My car A/C broke back in June and it was $1200 to fix, and I didn’t bat an eye. I need my A/C. I used poor Maggie in the backseat sweating in her carseat and getting blown to bits with the windows down for a week as my excuse, but really? I’m a wimp in the heat.

And if I had to go without a camera- any camera- for even a day, I JUST KNOW there would be the most awesome photo-ops ever and I would miss them and ARGH I would be so freaking mad. I hope it goes quickly and you get your ‘other baby’ back soon 😉

  10. Umm…I have only one thing on my mind and I almost started crying (not really) when I read this…MY BLOG. Its having some trouble getting switched over to the new host. I can’t see it or my dashboard or my cpanel stats. Nothing. And it didn’t even tell me first before going off to lala land. I NEED it back soon. My family is so tired of hearing about it and its all I twitter about and write on others blogs too. Its been a week and I am dying. I will send you my camera until yours is done (DSLR too) if you can convince my blog to work again. 🙂

  12. No AC? And I thought my swamp cooler was bad! It just stops working once it reaches like 90 degrees outside. But at least we have dry heat here! I would have been the same way, but DANG was that expensive!

I’m waiting for my camera to break so my husband is forced to buy me a new one! A good one for crying out loud! Sorry about yours!

  14. A Mac operating system. (I used to work for Apple, so the bias is strong.) If for some reason I am without my beautiful MacBook and I need to use a computer, I will wait however long is necessary in the lab for a Mac rather than touch a PC with a ten foot pole. Elitist? Whatever. I live in Manhattan. Being elitist is a pre-rec.

Secondly, I use a particular brand of henna on my hair that I can’t find in any store in NY, (madness!) so I order it in bulk from the interwebs.

Thirdly, I live with a British person, and now I can’t function without the electric kettle. It boils water in like, twenty seconds. Brilliant! We should have more of them in America.

  15. I SO HEAR YOU. My camera needs cleaning desperately but they’re telling me they have to send it away and it’ll take a month. A MONTH. I die inside at the thought. Which is why I haven’t done it yet. But now it’s a month before Halloween and I figure I really should do it. (And I want to get a little backup camera, but I know that after a dslr I’ll probably go insane dealing with a pointandshoot. Ah, the problems of my life. Maybe I just prefer to focus on the (gulp) less important ones (you’re so awesome, I feel exactly the same: I’m sorry baby, I didn’t mean it, you know I love you!!).)
