Attitude Shmattitude

I am currently in a bet with my husband that I can have a good attitude for seven whole days.

Some of you just gasped! Wondering how anyone in their right mind could go seven whole days with a sunshine sparkle outlook on life.

Others of you gasped! Wondering what the hell my problem is that I have to make a bet with my husband to be a nice person for seven days.

You see, Cody jokes. A lot. He claims that it’s his duty to bug me since I never had a brother. However after dealing with boys since Kindergarten I’m well aware that it is a boys calling in life to bug girls. To find one to bug ’til death do you part. Except in my case it’s for time and all eternity. Eternity is a long time to be bugged y’all.

With all the bugging and the joking and the HA! HA! I can get a little miffed. A little ticked. A little annoyed. A little short. Pretty soon Bad Attitude Betty is at the door calling for Cody’s fresh blood. So I’m taking a week to practice a good attitude toward bugging. Not only from Cody, but from humidity, grumpy kids, piles of laundry and law school.

So far? I know for a fact that I married exactly whom I was supposed to, more on that gagtastic realization later. I also know that with all this humidity I haven’t had to buy a single bottle of lotion for two years. I’ve learned that when the resident three foot grump goes on tirade, she’s more than happy to hang out in her room for an hour and color her frustrations out. I finally found a laundry combination that actually has me looking forward to stuffing my face into basketfuls of freshly folded laundry. And law school? Dude. My husband is thisclose to finishing right near the top of his class in law school. LAW SCHOOL. Dude rocks my world.

At the end of seven days he will be making me a three course dinner (see that? CONFIDENCE!) involving crab in some form (not krab, crab. crab crab crab.)

Anybody else want to take the challenge? While I won’t share my crab, Cody makes a wicked mashed potato.

  1. I will take the good attitude challenge right along with you. My ‘tude has been more than a bit testy recently due to the deadly combination of too much work, tropical storms (which leads to more work), dimwitted co-workers and family grating on my very last nerve. I, Andria, heretofore solemnly swear to have a winning disposition for the next seve days. I’ll open the betting pool now…I’m taking Friday. 🙂

I’ll have to wait a week to take that challenge. I have an excuse to be cranky for the next seven days or so….

  4. Hey being Bi-Polar 7 days is easy! The hard part is being around you mere mortals that are depressing, self centered, angry, unsure, Ahhh I could go on but what’s the use… 😉

  5. No, I am indeed NOT “in,” but I shall cheer you on from the sidelines. 🙂 It’s all I can do some days to convince myself, “Hey, self! Let’s try being cool as a cucumber today, ‘k? Let’s try totally digging our husband, not hating Texas, and laughing when the baby gets in to the kitchen cupboards for the 8 millionth time.” For the record, I usually dig my husband plenty, but lately 15 years of living with my own “pest” has me a little crabby. (or is that krabby?)

  6. Good for you! I am not up to the challenge. I must admit. Not during the start of a new school year with even more challenges than ever before (thank-you NCLB!) But I will support you in your’s.

You go girl and enjoy that crab 🙂

  7. well i would accept your challence except that i am going to france for a week tomorrow morning. i will be visiting my best friend from high school…i’ve known her for 22 years! so i’m pretty sure there won’t be any bad attitudes this week. maybe i’ll try this next week when i come home to reality. 4 kids who have been staying at friends’ houses all week…i’m sure i will be part grump when i see all their laundry and have to deal with school lunches again. laundry and lunches always makes me grumpy!

  8. Baby blues are kickin’ in so I can’t take the plunge. It would go against…hormones. No fighting those, you know.
But I feel your teased-pain. At least few times a month I whine to my husband to STOP TEASING ME DAMMIT!~ We have an agreement where I am allowed to veto a joke/rib in his rotation every now and then. Sigh. Some men never move past the 2nd grade notion that making fun of us = positive affection.

  9. I’m so happy to hear that I’m not the only wife who is treated like a little sister by her husband. My hubby likes to drive me up the wall – he’ll do something annoying, over and over again, until I yell – and then he laughs that he got me to yell! He’ll hide under the counter while I’m cooking and then jump out and scare the hell out of me; heck, 9 times out of 10 when I come home from somewhere he hides. He’ll put his cold feet on my legs in bed. Oh, the list could go on….I’m just so happy that it’s not just me!

  10. I wish I could take that challenge. Because I swear the next time my beloved hears a dog bark and turns to me and goes “What? I didn’t catch that.”, I’m likely to kill him. Really, comparing me to a yapping dog is not funny. Really.

  11. OOO, I feel your pain. Why, oh why do husbands use their wives for entertainment?

Your goal is admirable and I assure you it is completely do-able.

While battling depression I made a pact with myself for an attitude adjustment. I would find the positive in ANY situation, even if just one tiny thing. And guess what, it’s catching. While I’m not sunshine and rainbows every day, my bad days are much fewer and further between.

I’m rooting for you, I know you can do it!!

  12. I did a similar weeklong experiment wherein I refused to tell any lies. That’d seem simple, right? Well, it was anything but. You’d never believe how many “harmless” white lies people tell in a day!

and I agree with Anna – after this you need to challenge Cody to 7 days of no pestering! 🙂

  14. Aww, sounds like you have a good man. I’m impressed, top of the class in law school is no small feat. I know, trust me. My mom went to law school when I was in middle school, and I saw how hard she worked. I went to a lot of her classes when I didn’t have school.

I also went through law school with my husband. I think I deserve an honorary degree or something for going through it with my mom and with my hubby. Seriously.

On a more depressing note, I’m not sure I’m with the right man. We’ve fell in love at age 13, married at 19, but are having lots of problems now. Sorry, TMI.

  15. This week I am noticing that my first period class has the collective intelligence and ambition of a small bowl of mashed potatoes. So maybe by next week I will have motivated them to care about the planet and then great cheer and puppies and rainbows will abound. Maybe that week 🙂 But you go ahead…

  17. I found you from MMB and this post reminded me of one of my favorite Calvin and Hobbes quotes: “I imagine bugs and girls have a dim perception that nature played a cruel trick on them, but they lack the intelligence to really comprehend the magnitude of it.”

Being a girl…maybe I should be offended by that, but instead I laugh.

Good luck with the positive attitude!

  19. omg, I am too stubborn to do that. I just had an argument with my husband the other night about how he acts like he is my brother with a mission to just piss me off sometimes. I asked him simply not to do something anymore that wasn’t a biggy or nothing and instead of a simple “ok” I got a response as if I was his sister with argument and poking fun and instead of just letting it roll, I threw the hanger (the hanger that had resulted in the request by me) at him. Broke the hanger and bruised his hand pretty good. He later says he was just joking and wasn’t really arguing with me. Uh huh, now he has a bruised finger. That will teach him. But I love him, so yeah, waiting for the next round.

Next time bet your husband he can’t treat you like the love of his life for a week without any brotherly antics and see what you win.

  21. That bet sounds oddly familiar. I don’t think I’d make it seven WHOLE days though. But my husband? BUGS THE HECK OUT OF ME. It’s genetic, because his dad does the same thing.

I feel your pain girl, but I can’t commit to SEVEN WHOLE DAYS of niceness. I just can’t do it. Maybe I can, maybe I’m just lazy.

    Good luck!

I also have this weird suspicion that my being cheerful for a week would bring about the apocalypse or something.

oh, and I guess I’m delurking.
