Hot: Day 23-PUSH!

My neighbor had a baby yesterday. (SQUEE!)

She pushed for 45 minutes.

When I had a baby I pushed for 4 minutes.

If you’ve had a baby, how long did you push?

If you’ve adopted, how long did you have to wait between the birth and to being able to hold your baby?

If you’ve never had a baby and want to know how I got away with only pushing for 4 minutes, it’s because there is a God, and He loves me.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with hot. But given there are thousands of babies born everyday I’m just wondering how long it took most of them to get here.

  4. I pushed for 40 min

    BUT—I had NO CLUE I was in labor until 2 nurses came running in (I was on the monitor in the hospital for an induction the next morning for my BP) saying I was having constant contractions. Sure enough I was 4 cm dilated! WooHoo! Got my epidural and never once felt any pain! That’s my kinda labor!!

    The 3rd degree tear on the other hand…..not my kinda thing!

  5. Okay – I almost feel embarrassed here. I pushed for almost 2.5 hours, and I hated almost every minute of it. DS was on my belly in an instant, though, and it didn’t seem so bad!

  6. Baby 1 was 2 hours of pushing, but an hour and a half was to no avail – she was stuck. Baby 2 was a c section and it was about 5 or 6 hours before I was able to hold her.

    4 minutes! I’m impressed! 🙂

  7. With G-Bob, I was in the hospital two days before having him. They pumped full of virtually anything they thought would get me into a steady labor. Finally did…pushed for more than two hours and almost had emergency-C. And I tore so bad the doctor said to me, “Have your babies, then we’ll talk about reconstruction surgery.” (I mean WTF?!). With Peapod, it was over in less than four pushes.

  8. Baby 1: Two days before due date, 12 hour labor, 8 minutes of pushing (3 contractions).
    Baby 2: Two days after due date, 5 hour labor, 7 minutes of pushing (again 3 contractions).

    As much as my body hated being pregnant, it apparently knows how to deliver babies efficiently!! 🙂

  9. With my son I was in really painful back labor for about 24 hours before I got to push. I pushed for about 45 minutes I think, and that part didn’t hurt at all. Not what I was expecting, but I’ll take it! I did tear though.

  10. i was blessed, pushed with my first for 30 minutes, second kid took 3 pushes not sure how long. you deserved only 4 minutes b/c of the hell of the pregnancy.

    i loved giving birth. loved it. will miss it.

  17. I was in labor for about 12 hours, had him on his due date at 3 in the afternoon. I pushed for 1 hour and 40 minutes, but it didn’t seem like a long time at all, and all in all it was a very easy pleasant experience.

  19. My good friend had her first baby about 12 weeks early. She was in labor all day but didn’t know it until she called her mom and her mom told her to get her butt to the hospital. They parked in 15 minute parking. She had the baby so quickly that her husband had time to run down and move the car before they got ticketed. (They went to a hospital downtown where parking is a beast). Despite the baby being so early, he was about five pounds.

  20. #1 crowned after 20 minutes of pushing, but was stuck for the next 2 1/2 hours of pushing (that hurt…for a LONG time afterwards…)

    #2 came out after 2 contractions (I felt so good I would have left the hospital right away if they would have let me!)

    #3 about 5 minutes

    #4 about 5 minutes

  22. #1: 45 minutes then the $%^& doctor convinced me to get an episiotomy. I think she was in a hurry because the baby was not in any distress and 45 minutes isn’t that long. Think major episiotomy, I was 24 years, young, poor, and stupid. No episiotomies ever again.

    #2: Got several extra doses of epidural until they discovered it was inserted incorrectly and only hitting one side. When they got it right, I was numb to my neck. I sat at 10 cm for 2 hours during a shift change and never felt an urge to push. Midwife finally said let’s try. Less than 2 minutes and 4 pushes later ,I was high and convulsing with laughter and literally laughed her out. I think gravity did most of the work and I had no one tear.

    #3: 20 minutes: Jerk of anesthesiolologist turned off the epidural, unbeknownst to me just as I went to push. The nurse said he always did that and he thought third time moms should know the deal. What the living heck? I think he just wanted to leave early like the doctor from my first delivery. So I pushed and could swear I was screaming. Li’l Man was delivered natural at TEN POUNDS ONE OUNCE, 21 INCHES, AND 14-1/2 CM HEAD. gAH!!! I saw the video later and I was almost deathly silent.

    Even without drugs, I never, ever felt the urge to push any of my kids out. I always had to be told to try to push, weird, huh? My sister is so overcome with the urge that she delivered in her car.

  23. I didn’t get to push with my first. I delivered her feet and her legs on the way to the hospital, only oopsie! That was the wrong way so we had an emergency c-section.

    With my second, he was a little beast, 8 lbs 11 oz, so even though he was my second he was my first time pushing. I push for 1 hour to get him out, thought they were going to have to get the JAWS of LIFE to pry him from my womb. And when they put him in my arms I thought, “I have given birth to a 3 month old!” (My daughter was really small, only 9lbs at 5 months!)

  24. All doctors have said I am “born to bear.”

    4 childbirths, no drugs, 3 or 4 pushes a piece.

    5th childbirth? Nothing left to prove with the whole stupid “natural childbirth” thing, had an epidural, still just a few pushes.

    “Born to bear,” indeed.

  25. 1st- baby posterior, 2 1/2 hrs of pushing finally assisted with an episiotomy and the vacuum

    2nd- 3 contractions, maybe five minutes

    3rd- a bit of a blur, pushing for maybe 10 minutes

    4th- being baked, but will think of the shorter, easier births for the next eight months

  26. No pushing/contracting/labor here. Just one perfectly sweet adopted little love. She was born at 3:10pm, and in my arms by 3:30pm. Thanks to her fantastic birth mom, we were able to witness her miraculous birth, and hubby even was able to cut her umbilical cord. Two LONG days later we brought her home and we’ve been lovin’ on her ever since.

    Baby #3 born in hallway as I walked into hospital (head popped right out into my pants) so I don’t know–FAST

  30. Does it count if I comment on the birth of my niece IN INDY? i think i should get extra points for the in indy part…

    she was born about 45 min after my sister arrived at the hospital, a month early. she was in a hurry to join us. Totally healthy and happy, which we are all very thankful for. Gracie is the love of all our lives, and I’m glad that she waited at least that long to come into this world.

    I myself have never had a baby, but i would like know if the other family stories are real and (like my sister, and my mom for any 3 of us, or my aunts…) i won’t have time for an epidural (!!eek!!) or if i don’t have to worry as much as i think i should…. actually, writing this makes me more freaked out that NO ONE in my fam has had an epi! me = screwed, no? I guess I’ll only find out for myself… just a tad scary…

  32. I had severe preeclampsia resulting in my daughter being born by emergency c-section 6 weeks early. She immediately went to the NICU and I went to recovery so I didn’t get to see her until 30 hours later. I did a lot of crying during that 30 hours.

  33. 9 1/2 months of pregnancy (2 weeks late). 8 1/2 months of puking. 22.5 hours of labor (that’s just counting after the water broke). 30 minutes of pushing. Lots of not fun tearing. = 1 Really cute kid.

  34. #1 – no nothing; water broke a day before scheduled c-section; had c-section (breech)

    #2 – attempted a VBAC; after 2 days of labor and 4 hours of exhausted, extended, painful, baby-going-nowhere pushing, had another c-section (she was just shy of 10 pounds)

    #3 – scheduled c-section

    #4 – went into labor 2 days before scheduled c-section; c-section then performed

    End of my labor stories. 4 is my limit. There’s a chance three was my limit, but I’m blessed with 4, so we’ll see how that works out. 🙂

    painful and mind numbing international adoption redtape that lead us to our beautiful 18 month old Russian princess, now about to turn four.

  40. #1 baby–37 hour of labor (yes 37, that’s not a typo) and over an hour and twenty minutes of pushing.
    #2 baby–10 hours of labor, 14 minutes of pushing.
    #3 baby– 8 hours of labor, no pushing (C-section instead)

  46. I’ve been posting all about my baby stories lately since I have another one I’m about to push out. Out of my three, the longest I had to push was about 10-15 minutes and he was a big baby. My last one’s whole body literally came out all at once in one push. I am hoping for something like that with this next one!

  47. One push for Wasabi Girl. She’s a natural gymnast and came out, stuck her landing, and did that hands-in-the-air thing.

    Jungle Boy, her twin, got lost. We all started yelling “move towards the light!” but typical male, he stubbornly refused to listen to directions. The door started to close. The doctor reached her hand in – up to the elbow and could only feel his fingertips. He traveled up into my neck. Emergency C-Section. Still couldn’t reach him. Classical C-Section, which means “gutted like a fish” to get that guy out.

  48. # 1 daughter: induced due to her supposed “huge” weight. After being at the hospital and awake for 24 hours, started pushing. After 4 hours of pushing, ended up with a C-section and a baby that weighed 7 lbs, 2 oz. Whoops! No huge baby.

    #2 daughter – scheduled C-section 19 months after #1. Should have had them put in a zipper the 1st time.

  50. I pushed the first one for an hour after 23 hours of labor. The 10lb stinker wouldn’t budge, so emergency c-section.
    The second one was a blessed 0 minutes of labor and 0 pushes with a scheduled repeat section.
    Thank God for narcotics!
