A Snackish Contest.

Given that I’m about to bask in the glow of So You Think You Can Dance for the next two hours (OH HAPPY FLIPPING DAY) it’s a given that I am going to need a snack. Maybe several.

Now if I had my choice I’d me shoving Air Heads, Cheetos and Oreos down my gullet and breakneck speed.

But then I’d be kinda big. And unhealthy. And probably kinda sick. Not to mention I’d most likely poop funny colors.

So I have to choose wisely. Way more wisely than Air Heads, Cheetos and Oreos.

Which leads me to my list of of favorite snackish type things (and the moosh’s, gah I hate to share sometimes.).

  • Avocado, cut into chunks with a wee bit of salsa and a sprinkle of garlic salt. Dip what you wish. Or just eat it straight out of the bowl. Whatever.
  • Fritos (scoops) dipped into (4% large curd) cottage cheese. Did you snarl your nose? Dude, if you only knew.
  • Cold pineapple(fresh only), a bit of milk (2%), some ice and a splash of vanilla. Blend the daylights out of it and OH BABY.
  • Edamame (soybeans, I prefer shelled). Steamed, brought to room temperature and lightly salted.
  • Ham (deli sliced) wrapped (Vlasic please) dill pickles. Okay, so sodium overload. But it’s only occasional.
  • Artichokes. Steamed. With a little mayo to dip. My sister and I used to battle over the heart.
  • Finally, popcorn and orange juice. But not just any popcorn. Only Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn is allowed in my house and I prefer it to be either Old Fashioned Butter or their new Buttery Garlic stuff (loooove). And yes, orange juice. Like peas and carrots. My dad and sister subscribe to the popcorn orange juice school of thought also.

After a very stressful day on the popcorn aisle when I was unable to find Old Fashioned Butter, (seriously, when they stop making something you so dearly love and are impassioned to? STRESSFUL.) I swore to never love again.

Turns out I was just at the wrong store. Old Fashioned Butter is alive and well. And on sale at Marsh. *phew*

Orville heard of my loyalty and offered up a couple of sweet gift packs of popcorn for me to give away. Want one? You know you do. I got one, well, I already ate it all, but I got one.

So here goes. Leave a comment, tell me you’re favorite snack or what popcorn you are loyal to. Let’s just say if it’s not Orville Redenbacher’s Old Fashioned Butter you don’t know what you’re talking about. (However I should give credit to the Buttery Garlic stuff, it comes in mini bags, Old Fashioned doesn’t.) I can’t sit on the couch for longer than an hour without popcorn. Seriously. Love.

Okay, contest. comment, tell me your favorite snack, your family’s favorite snack. A snack that holds a special place in your heart. I’ll pick two comments at random on Monday May 26th. Which means you have until Sunday May 25th at midnight EST to enter. And which also means you need to leave me a valid email address (no one else will see it but me.).

Good luck. I’m going to go pop some popcorn, I told myself I couldn’t have any until after I wrote this post.

Oops, forgot to hit publish. Heh.

  1. Orville is the man, just sayin’.

We like Graham crackers with canned frosting. Not the most healthy but darn good. And we’re all about cookie cutter cut tortilla baked and served with __insert your fav dip here___.

    We’re carb people.

  2. Am I disqualified if I admit that I did snarl my nose at Scoops and cottage cheese? Dude.

I’m going to go with homemade guacamole and yellow corn chips. I hate almost a whole bowl of guacamole when I was pregnant with baby girl and then couldn’t stand to even LOOK at an avocado for the rest of the pregnancy. It was a sad, sad time in my life. Luckily, I’ve recovered!

  3. I’m kind of partial to good old air popped popcorn – with lots of butter and not too much salt. Nothing like taking something relatively healthy and pouring butter on it.

I’m also kind of partial to corn chips with flax seed from the bulk food store – I like salty.

I’ve really enjoy reading your blog – keep up the good work 🙂

  4. Do you mix the popcorn and orange juice?? Yikes.

Actually, I have no room to talk. My family (mother’s side) LOVES fritos and bananas. Together. Scoops are probably better, cause then you can just slice the banana right onto the frito. Yum… Darn, now I gotta go buy bananas.

  5. YES, “So You Think You Can Dance” is back! I am home alone this evening, and I enjoyed the whole 2 hour show! It was just as great as always. I watched it while eating some rice pudding. (Not a typical snack, but I was seriously craving it tonight.)

I love popcorn. I don’t have a particular favorite brand…whatever is on sale usually. But I LOVE eating it with chocolate fudge. I don’t usually have that around, so any chocolate will do. My great-grandparents always served popcorn with fudge, so did my grandparents, and my mom did occasionally. No wonder I do it. So, I can understand your orange juice with popcorn thing.

  7. OMG, I am also FREAKISHLY excited about the return of So You Think You Can Dance. None of my friends are into it, but now I can find kindred spirits in blog land!

My best friend makes the best guacamole. I would eat it every day. With my favorite chips, Santitas white corn tortilla chips (I don’t know why, I just really like the thickness etc). I could also snack constantly on bread and cheese. My favorite cheese is called ‘barely buzzed’ and I buy it at the fancy cheese store where my friend works. It has lavender in it and is coated in coffee grounds. Are you snarling your nose now? Well, it’s actually delicious!

  9. My family’s tv snack growing up was popcorn but we weren’t fancy enough for the microwave stuff, we went the way of air popped with butter and salt. We switched your OJ for Root Beer, but I’ll have to say your route is healthier.

For me, chips are usually my downfall as well as chocolate. But a good snack is also pita chips dips in tzakki dip ( yes I’m aware that is spelled wrong but have no clue how to spell it)

  11. soo popcorn with salt and vinigar chips, i dont like salt and vinegar chips alone but if you mix both in a bowl, they are amazing. the other thing we have is either frozen hot chocolate or fruit smoothies. we make both. frozen hot chocolate we fill up our magic bullet with ice add chocolate syrup and fill with milk and blend…. sooooooooo good. and the smoothies, we freeze french vanilla fat free yogurt in ice cube trays. put about 3-4 cubes in the magic bullet cup add frozen fruit like strawberries, mangos etc… fill with milk and blend the heck out of it

Homemade kettle corn – just put a tablespoon fulla supafine sugar in with the popcorn in the pan because I make popcorn on the stove, properly, not this newfangled microwave way because microwave popcorn is teh evil.

A whole wheat tortilla, cooked on the comal with just a little butter and sprinkled with superfine sugar and cinnamon til it all melts. Super yum.

  13. We have two go-to snacks ’round Casa del Spohr and they are both awesome.

We will either eat pretzel chips (really thin, flat pretzels) and hummus from Trader Joe’s.

    Or

When we feel very decadent, we have a Ploughman’s Lunch (meats, cheeses, crusty bread, butter, pickles, and an apple. Yeah, some people have that as a meal, we have it as a snack around these parts.

I’ve been looking for the buttery garlic popcorn and I can’t find it. I think you made it up.

For a treat I love York Peppermint Patties! (you can’t really call this a snack unless you eat the whole bag… which I try not to do!

Will be sure to try your avocado snack. I do enjoy a good guacamole.

  19. Two slices of whole grain or multi-grain bread, toasted. Smeared with fat-free hellman’s mayo. Topped with fresh, ripe tomatoes (grown in AZ by my grandfather [who, as luck would have it, died last summer, leaving me sad AND without tomatoes]) salted and peppered, and squished together. Creating the world’s most simple and delicious sandwich.

Cut into triangular halves, and accompanied by a tall glass of icy-cold skim milk.

    I’m drooling.

  20. Hmmm, there seems to be a lot of popcorn fans out there!

I love me some Orville popcorn. When the bag just comes out of the microwave I pour it in a plastick bowl and then throw in a handful of regular M&M’s. The chocolate melts a bit and is a perfect combination of sweet and salt. It is the cheap mans version of Peterbrooke’s (local chocolatier) chocolate covered popcorn.

I also love, love, love chocolate chip cookies. When they are warm from the oven put a few in a bowl and then put a scoop of vanilla ice cream over them and hear them sizzle and ooze. Yummy!

…and now for the part where I kiss up. Your blog is seriously the first one that I check each morning. LOVE IT!

  21. When we are watching a movie, the family HAS to have Redenbacher “Kettle Corn”, or “Sweet and Salty” and Pepsi. Sometimes I like to float a piece or two of popcorn in my Pepsi. 😉 I, too, love edemame. But my all tme fave, is when we are driving, say on a long drive or driving to vacay, when it is okay to eat… I love some peanuts in a Dr. Pepper! You know the long bag of peanuts you get at the gas station..pour them babies in a Dr. Pepper and you have pure bliss. I just noticed a theme of me having to dip my food in my drinks..?

OH and just in case no one has tried it yet, Ben and Jerry’s makes a new flavor…Cake Batter…that’s all I have to say on that one.

As for popcorn, I don’t think I have a preference. If I lived in the US, I’m sure it would be Orville Redenbacher’s Old Fashioned Butter.

As for my favorite snack, it’s hard to pick just one… I love a fresh baguette of french bread with some olive-garlic tapenade. Also chips and guacamole, mmmmmm! But the easiest, laziest one I always fall back on is crackers with pepper jack cheese – cheesy and spicy at the same time! YAY!

  29. I should say that your cottage cheese/Frito taste should be altered just a bit. When I was in kindergarten ( it was half day kindergarted way back when ), every Wednesday after school my Granny would pick me up after school. She is the person that started my on a lifelong addiction to Nacho Cheese Doritos dipped in cottage cheese. There was nothing better to me back then. An afternoon of ‘Days of Our Lives’, ‘Doctors’ and my awesome snack! Thirty years later, I still love Doritos and cottage cheese. ( My Granny is now 96 and still makes sure there is cottage cheese available for me at her house! I love her to no end!!!)

Blanch asparagus (thinest ones you can get) and place in ice bath. Wrap each spear or two with some provolone followed by prosciutto. Place on cookie sheet and bake in oven till cheese is melted! – enjoy!
