When 34D shot 40D.

So I have this new camera. A new camera for which I sacrificed my left leg.

Literally.

Cody told me months ago that he wanted (WANTED!) me to get an SLR if and when he was hired on for a summer position. Something about he “thought I’d be good at it and that it would give me a new sense of fulfillment and satisfaction blah blah blah.”

I think it was more along the lines of “HERE WIFE, SOMETHING SHINY WITH LOTS OF BUTTONS TO TAKE YOUR MIND OFF THE FACT THAT I’M ALWAYS GONE.”

Whatever, I have a camera and I love it.

Self Portrait Chicago '08

(For all you inquiring minds, it is a Canon 40D. And yes my b0obs are 34D.)

But here’s the thing. My mom is a photographer and my best friend is a photographer. And I don’t mean photographer in the sense of having a really shiny expensive camera with lots of buttons that they take a lot of pictures with. (Like me, HI!) I mean photographer, photographer. Pay lots of money, published in books photographer.

Me? I had a weekend in Chicago with my mom. This is the extent of my photographic training.

So I do not claim to be a photographer. So if you want to roll your eyes at my attempts go ahead. I think I’m finally over what everyone else thinks of me.

I like my camera. I love the click the shutter makes. I love that I have a hobby that doesn’t involve doing dishes.

So without further adieu, some pictures.

  1. Just because you don’t photograph for a living doesn’t mean you aren’t a photographer! Those are excellent pictures! BTW- I am drooling with jealousy over your new camera!

  2. Those are great! Don’t feel self-conscious. The beauty of the digital SLR is the ability to take copious amounts of consequence-free photos and delete all the duds.

And your husband is right: I got an SLR last year, and it totally gave me a fresh creative outlet and new lease on life as a stay-at-home mom.

    Good luck!

  3. Great pictures!! I desperately want an SLR…but I may not be able to afford one at this time. *sigh* That’s okay, I’ll be getting a purdy just-under-SLR soon…it will keep my happy for a little bit, I hope.

I love that first picture…it’s so awesome!!

(P.S. I’m hoping our talk with the neighbor last night swayed hubster to letting me spend more on a better camera :P)

  4. Hey, my bra size matches your camera… sucks to be still nursing.
Gotta admit I think I like the plumber’s crack one best! 😉
I’m so jealous of you though. I have a Canon D-50 and I’d LOVE to have a weekend or even a day with with a professional to teach me some tricks!

  7. Lovely pictures! Give yourself some credit, girl! Those are very nice. Cool camera. I’m out of it, since I’d never heard of that D40, 40D – whatever before, but it sounds nifty. And I sooo dig the little clicky sound a camera makes, too. Sort of like the click my mom’s purse used to make when I was a kid and asked for a kleenex in church. 🙂

  8. Casey, these are great pictures! Before I read the whole way through I thought you were gonna say that the first few pictures were by your mom and I figured you’d show yours later. I absolutely love the first shot.

  10. For someone who claims they are not a “photographer” those are some pretty awesome shots … and I know that the shiny new camera was simply the inspiration … ’cause I was gifted a D40 for Christmas and my shots are not even close to being that wonderful!!!

  11. Love, Love, LOVE the pictures! Especially the first one with the reflection and the one with the couple having a moment.

And about my bra size? Ha. I’m sure you remember how I decided to try out Mandi’s breast pump over Christmas. The girls are just too small to even create a suction.

  12. I really like the way you frame your subjects within the pictures. Are you planning to take classes? Our town has a continuing education series that includes photography – I’ve been tempted to try it but right now, I’m working with a little point and shoot. One that I love but I’m not sure if it’s up to the test of classes and homework:)

  13. SRLs are the best. I remember my dad teaching me photography tricks on his old film SLR. Love the crying swordsman–reminds me of my brothers and son.

And, on my 3rd pregnancy, I’m back up to a 34G, here. Husband loves it, but you can’t buy bras that size *anywhere*. Not Even Frederick’s goes that big.
